There is something very indulging in going on a staycation. Much more so, when you get to do that by staying at a 5-star hotel like the amazing and historic, Hilton Athens!
Is there anything better than a chance to escape daily life for a couple of days and treat yourself to a relaxing weekend? Sometimes being a tourist in your own city is one of the best experiences ever. You don’t have to spend a lot of time traveling to another location, yet you get all the benefits of a good change of scenery. Combine that with a lovely 5-star hotel stay and it’s a city break as good as it can ever be!
The Hilton Athens hotel
Hilton Athens is one of the biggest and most luxurious hotels of the city, as well as a true historic landmark. Even the surrounding area is now called “Hilton”! The hotel is located in a very central location of Athens, just opposite the Evaggelismos metro station, just a few minutes from Syntagma square, the very center of Athens.
I have been a “regular” visitor of Hilton Athens since I was a child. This was my parents’ favourite place for a celebratory dinner every Christmas and other holiday. Later, as an adult, the famous Galaxy Bar & Restaurant (best rooftop view in Athens, if I may say so) was my go to for amazing cocktails with friends, especially in the summer.
This time, I was invited to experience the hotel in a different, more intimate way: to stay as a guest and even more so, at one of their upscale Executive Rooms, located in the top three floors. Needless to say, I jumped at the opportunity!
Once through the entrance, you are greeted by a bright and airy open space that has the reception a bit to the left, as well as leads to other venues, such as the new Aethrion Lounge. There you can enjoy a nice cup of coffee or tea, have a snack or drink, while waiting for your room to be prepared or meeting a friend.
Even though the main reception is open for all guests, those staying at an Executive Room have a reception exclusive to them, on the 11th floor, where the Executive Lounge is also located.
Apart from a dedicated private reception area, the Executive Lounge that is located in the 11th floor of Hilton Athens also offers free continental breakfast, as well as free snacks and drinks during happy hour, exclusively for guests staying at an Executive Room. All this comes in addition to being able to enjoy a magnificent view of Athens and the Acropolis from the top three floors of the hotel. Totally worth the upgrade, I you ask me!
The Hilton Athens Executive Room Experience
Following my checking in at the Executive Lounge reception desk, I gently walked down the carpeted and well-lit corridor to my room, for it was so quiet, I didn’t want to disturb anyone with my footsteps. A promising start to a quiet, comfortable night’s sleep.
The room itself was bright and spacious, with a large, comfy bed (best sleep I’ve had in my traveling life so far). The Executive room had all the luxury amenities the discerning traveller would expect from a 5-star hotel, such as a 42″ satellite TV and high-speed wireless Internet as well as a fully stocked mini-bar, coffee & tea making facilities, a professional level hairdryer, quality towel robes, slippers and even an actual ironing board and steam iron.
I was very impressed by the gorgeous bathroom. It’s practically a room by itself! Made completely out of marble, it has amazing mirror lights, perfect for a lady’s makeup routine, but also a big bathtub as well as a spacious separate shower cabin. Needless to say, I much enjoyed a most relaxing bubble bath in that bathtub!
The next morning, I decide to order room service for my breakfast. I made a mistake in the order card I had left outside my door the previous evening, so I got American style breakfast instead of Continental. When I phoned the reception to ask what had happened, as I wasn’t aware of the mistake, they were so obliging and rushed to bring me a continental breakfast in addition to the American one I had already received. They went so above and beyond to make sure I was happy with my breakfast that I felt bad about having caused such a fuss!
The Hiltonia Spa
I’ve already mentioned the exclusive access to the 11th floor Executive Lounge, but it is also worth mentioning that staying at an Executive Room also gives you free access to the splendid Hiltonia Spa.
There you’ll find an amazing (and big!) indoor heated pool, jacuzzi, sauna and a fully equipped gym. Moreover, and at extra cost, you can enjoy spa services such as massages and beauty treatments. Personally I went for an unbelievable hyaluronic facial treatment which left me relaxed and face totally glowing.
Now, although I stayed as a guest in winter, I often make use of their open air swimming pool in the summer and I have to tell you, it is the biggest hotel swimming pool in Athens. It is open to the public, for a fee, has plenty of chaise-longues to relax and a lovely poolside restaurant, the Oasis Bar & Grill, which serves from burgers and juices to light Mediterranean cuisine.
A foodie heaven
In addition to high quality accommodation, Hilton Athens offers an equally high quality cuisine. After all, one wouldn’t accept anything less from a 5-star hotel of a European metropolis. The main restaurant is the Byzantino in the ground floor, it’s open all day and this is also where the main breakfast is served. I am particularly fond of their desserts.
One of the highlights of Hilton Athens is the Galaxy Bar & Restaurant at the top floor of the hotel, with stunning views to the city of Athens and its landmark, the Acropolis. It offers elegant dishes with a Mediterranean flair, as well hosts probably the best sushi bar in town (it’s my favourite, at least). You can read all about my sushi indulgence at the Galaxy Restaurant in its very own post (that’s how much I love it!)
In addition to comfortable rooms with lavish bathrooms and all the amenities, great food and fantastic views, Hilton Athens is also very centrally located, just five minutes by foot from the Evaggelismos metro station and one metro stop away from the city centre. It’s perfect to use it as your sightseeing basis, very close to some of the most popular attractions, including:
- The Acropolis Museum
- The picturesque Plaka district
- Ermou street shopping area
- National Art Gallery (currently under refurbishment)
- Megaron, the Athens Concert Hall
- The Byzantine Museum
- The National Garden
- Syntagma square and the Parliament buildings
- The Panathinaiko stadium
- Lycabettus hill
- The upscale shopping area of Kolonaki
